The U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market crossed $60 billion - one of the fastest-growing ETF categories in financial history. Yet Bitcoin's global mass adoption remains stubbornly out of reach. That tension sat at the center of a panel at Bitcoin MENA on December 9, 2025, in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Laura K. Inamedinova, Founder of LKI Consulting, moderated the session "Global Growth Opportunities in the Bitcoin Ecosystem," bringing together two senior women in the industry for a conversation that moved between macro cycles, infrastructure gaps, and what it will actually take to reach the next billion users.
Panelists:
Rachel Conlan - Global Chief Marketing Officer, Binance
Clarisse Hagège - CEO & Founder, Dfns
The altcoin season playbook is outdated. The historical pattern - Bitcoin pumps, capital rotates into altcoins - has been disrupted. Institutional inflows are now the dominant price driver, and the panel challenged the need to stop waiting for a retail-led cycle that may not return on familiar terms.
ETF momentum creates infrastructure opportunities well beyond U.S. borders. With $60 billion in spot Bitcoin ETFs, Conlan highlighted the gaps in non-U.S. markets - specifically in the markets where adoption and infrastructure thats needed to meet institutional demand.
Stablecoins have quietly outpaced Bitcoin as a settlement layer - and that's a strategic opening. Stablecoins now move trillions of dollars annually, significantly outpacing Bitcoin's daily payment volume.Stablecoins are not the competition - the real question is where Bitcoin fits in a settlement environment where stablecoins already dominate.
Security is the adoption ceiling for Web2 users. Hagège identified this as the friction point most often underestimated by builders. For users transitioning from traditional finance, the security model of self-custody and private key management remains a barrier that product design alone has not overcome.
Regulatory clarity is a prerequisite, not a bonus. El Salvador's legal tender adoption, Hong Kong's retail trading permissions, and the UAE's exchange licensing framework represent meaningful steps. But the gap between regulatory permission and genuine mass adoption is still wide - and the panel was direct that infrastructure, education, and UX still have more ground to cover than policy does.
